What is a Credit Union?

A non-profit financial institution that is privately owned and operated entirely by its members. Credit unions provide financial services for their members, including savings and lending. To join a credit union, a person must ordinarily belong to a participating organization, such as a college alumni association or labor union or share a common employer. When a person deposits money in a credit union, he/she becomes a member of the credit union because the deposit is considered partial ownership in the credit union.

Is the Elgin Mental Health Center Employees' Credit Union owned or operated by the State of Illinois or Elgin Mental Health Center?

No. While regulated by the State of Illinois, it is owned by it's membership and is NOT a part of any government agency or Department. In our case it has 2 full time employees and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of volunteers drawn from current and former EMHC employees.
